"surreal scapes" installation

This series of oil paintings imagines surreal scapes in which familiar and unknown elements mingle amidst quiet, still or slowly shifting, dry, oxygenless atmospheres. Ambiguity in this placid context is intended to inspire a comfortable disorientation. The motifs of the black orb, horizons, and hollow spaces embody the notions of blind spots, the vastness beyond our visibility, and the places we can observe only from the outside. I believe that when we take the time to question ourselves, interrogate our assumptions, and acknowledge the limits of our understanding, we are better for it.

This body of work was exhibited in the spring of 2023 in Whitman College's Sheehan Gallery as part of my senior thesis project. The above artist statement was included in the exhibit.
